There are various types of patent searches and studies, and they are performed differently. You may choose what is suitable for you, according to the goal of the search and the characteristics of your invention. For example:
Patents search prior to filing of a patent application
The search is performed worldwide, and includes patents and published patent applications; the search should also include patents no more in force and, indeed, all published matter.
Freedom to Operate Search
This patents search is to check for an infringement of others' patents.
The search should include patents in force, in the country or countries where you plan to operate.
You may also check for published patent applications in these countries, for these may became a threat if a patent is granted.
You may also consider opposing a patent grant- it is easier to oppose grant of a patent, than to invalidate the patent after grant.
Patentability study
This study checks whether your invention meets all the criteria for patent grant, according to the Patent Law in the country where a patent is desired.
Technical feasibility study
If there is doubt re the operativeness of your invention, you can perform a technical feasibility study to ascertain that an apparatus or method based on your invention, indeed works. There are various venues for peforming this study, for example a computer simulation or building a prototype and testing it.

Patent-related searches and studies are a vast area of research, one can delve therein to no end. There are many millions of patents, present and past; technical literature, etc. How much research is enough? For a worldwide search, one has to translate from many languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, etc. Any decision re research has implications in time to perform, and costs.
The cost of the research should be commensurate with the estimated cost of the enterprise under consideration:
If one only desires to file for patent protection, the investment in search may be significantly less than that required preparatory to a Research and Design (R&D) project, or founding a plant to manufacture the product, or initiating a large-scale marketing and sales program.
