One patent for Europe
An European patent covers countries in Western Europe mostly.
Which countries will be included in your European patent? Well, you decide that. The more countries you designate, the higher the Gov't fees. The initial designation is important- you can remove countries from the list, but can't add countries later on.
An advantage of the European patent is that you file one patent application, which undergoes one examination. If allowed for patent, it becomes a registered patent covering the designated countries in Europe.
The expenses are higher, but this is justified for those desiring protection in more countries.

Types of countries in the EPO Treaty
The EPO Treaty defines three groups of countries:
Member states (number: 38)
Extension states (number: 2)
Validation states (number: 1)
In each group, the Official fees may differ.

A regional patent covers a group of countries. EPO is one of the regional patents, covering Western Europe.
