Types of patents
There are two types of patents: National patents, offering each protection in one country; and regional patents, offering protection each in a group of countries.
There are also two types of temporary patent applications, which can't convert into granted patents, rather they become abandoned after a predefined time period: The international PCT patent application and the provisional patent application in the US.

EPO European regional patent
A regional European patent may include part or all of the following countries:

Planning your patents protection strategy according to the Paris Convention
An inventor or entrepreneur may desire to file patent applications before starting business-related activities, to prevent loss of rights because of invention disclosure. However, filing patent applications in many countries may be prohibitively expensive.
What to do? The Paris Convention may help, for it declares: It is enough for the inventor to file a patent application just in one of the countries parties to the Convention, to achieve priority rights in all the member countries.
That is, patent applications filed in the other countries within one year from the first filing, will be granted the same filing date, as the first filed patent application.
There are 177 member countries in the Paris Convention, out of 194 countries worldwide.
